Davis Technical College Students Take Home Silver and Gold
07/15/2019 | Press Release
KAYSVILLE, Utah– Davis Technical College students took home two gold medals and one silver medal at this year’s national SkillsUSA competition, and won 17 top 10 finishes at the international Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) competition. The SkillsUSA competition was held in Louisville, Kentucky from June 24-28, and the HOSA competition was held in Orlando, Florida from June 19-22.
SkillsUSA provides education programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education in the nation’s classrooms. Students from Davis Tech have participated in the SkillsUSA competition for over 20 years, and even those who do not take home a medal gain valuable experience from the event.
“Students get the opportunity to gain work skills in a competitive environment, and then demonstrate their skill set. In some cases, judges are actually able to provide job opportunities,” said Kelley Rhoe-Collins, director of service professions and academic development.
HOSA is a unique program that provides leadership and skill development, motivation and recognition to students pursuing careers in health professions. Competitions held by HOSA allow students to showcase their skills at a competitive event.
“We got to watch the instructor and our student take first place. We were all cheering, and we’re from this small tech school in Kaysville Utah, it was incredible,” said Leslie Mock, vice president of instruction at Davis Tech.
However, these events are about more than winning.
“Taking students to these competitions is a way to let them know we really care about what they’re doing and we really want them to get out there and excel,” said Mock.
